HOW CAN A VEGAN KITKAT® BAR DELIVER A 18% LOWER CARBON FOOTPRINT THAN A STANDARD KITKAT® MILK CHOCOLATE BAR?
To make your break even better, the Vegan KitKat® bar has, in its full lifecycle, a carbon footprint 18% lower than the standard KitKat® milk chocolate bar.*
This is thanks to adapting the recipe to include plant-based ingredients.
It’s a small step but every step counts…
*Full life cycle means from farm to consumer, up to the disposal of the packaging.
OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTION IS INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED BY TRUSTED PARTNERS
We haven’t measured the carbon reduction alone. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of your Vegan KitKat® bar was completed internally and the critical review (ISO14040-2006) was conducted by the sustainability consultancy, Quantis. using the best available data. Then the Carbon Trust certified the carbon footprint reduction comparing your standard KitKat® milk chocolate bar with your Vegan KitKat® bar.
They delivered the “Carbon Reduction Certificate” to confirm that a Vegan KitKat® bar has a 18% lower carbon footprint than a standard KitKat® milk chocolate bar.
This is just the beginning of our journey to carbon neutrality. We’re aiming to continue our reduction journey, monitoring our carbon footprint with the support of trusted partners.
KITKAT® IS AIMING TO REACH CARBON NEUTRALITY BY 2025
We’re working hard each day to make your break even better. KitKat® is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2025. It’s definitely a challenging journey, but we’re putting all our efforts into steadily reducing our carbon footprint.
These reductions will mainly stem from initiatives such as:
What does Carbon Footprint mean?
A carbon footprint is the carbon emissions impact generated by the full life cycle of a product.
What is a life cycle analysis?
Life cycle analysis or LCA (also known as life cycle assessment) is a methodology for the assessment of environmental impacts associated with all stages in the life cycle of a product, process or service.
Why is KitKat® taking 2018 as a reference year?
The Nestle commitments to Net Zero by 2050 refer to a baseline defined in 2018 and our calculated emissions at that time, so we measure our progress against the situation that year.
What does critical review mean?
This process ensures consistency between our life cycle assessment and the principles and requirements of applicable international standards - ISO14040, ISO14044 and ISO14067 in our case. It also ensures that methods are scientifically valid, input data is appropriated, limitations are properly considered during the analysis, and results are transparently reported. The critical review is done by an independent third party to ensure the credibility of our results. For KitKat® Vegan, the critical review was handled by Quantis.
What does a reduced Carbon Footprint mean?
It means that the product’s carbon footprint is reduced compared to a similar product – or that it’s gradually going down each year. It also demonstrates the company’s aim to achieve ongoing footprint reductions.
